The new body of work I have been creating since early 2016
has been a rewarding shift in my painting practice. In addition to
transitioning to new media (oil and cold wax on deep-cradled Gessobord
panels), this work explores a completely different style and subject matter.
These new paintings are
gestural abstractions inspired by the planet Mars. My husband is an
astronomer,
and one of his responsibilities has been to serve on the International
Astronomical Union's committee that names geological features on Mars.
Mars nomenclature is a fascinating process and has a very
interesting history, beginning with the Milanese astronomer
Schiaparelli’s work
in the late 1800s based on his visual observations of the planet. At
that time
Schiaparelli was only able to observe albedo features (dark and light
patterns
on the planet’s surface) as seen from the telescopes of that era.
Schiaparelli’s thematic nomenclature referred back to geographical and
mythical names of
the ancient world, and, he chose names “whose sound awakes such pleasant
memories.” This procedure for naming features on Mars has continued into the
present
day. HiRISE, THEMIS, and other orbiting instruments and spacecraft have
been
able to gather magnificent visual detail of martian geography. I became
interested in the martian place names for their poetic and ambiguous
associations, and
I thought they would make great titles for abstract paintings. The link
between
titles and imagery has always been an important focus in my work. So I
began to
study the photographic data that has been gathered from the various
spacecraft
and I have found a rich resource for “landscape” abstractions that
energizes me
and seems limitless in its potential.
She teaches all over the world. I was fortunate to spend a few hours watching her work. I was so inspired that I decided to experiment with cold wax when I got back to my studio. Using Gamblin cold wax medium with oil paint allows for a myriad of textures and effects that I was unable to achieve with oil paint alone. The wax also helps the paint set up faster, so layering is facilitated. I stopped using stretched canvases – you need a rigid support to paint on, so now I am working on beautiful panels with 2 inch birch cradles (sides). The panels are lovely physical objects in themselves, and, for now, I’m working with small sizes. I’m no longer using brushes – instead I’m reaching for palette knives, squeegees, scrapers, brayers, and pigment sticks. I am still in a relatively experimental stage, but I love the results so far, and have decided to move forward with this major transformation in my style and materials. I am taking up a new challenge and I’m very excited about this evolution in my work.

I have been painting grids for five years, and I have been using only oil paints on canvas for more than 30 years. The change in my materials and technique has been a revelation. Sometimes it can be a little frightening to step out of your “comfort zone” and reinvent yourself. But I feel that the New Year and my recent birthday have been nudges to inspire a radical shift. I’m excited, and look forward to creating this new body of work.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Black is darkness, the shadow self, the
unknown, the unknowable. For me, the darkness is mystery, and since one can’t
see in the darkness, one must listen. Stillness and silence are necessary for
this kind of listening – an awareness of feelings and thoughts and mythic
truths brings the unconscious self into the light. Paradoxically, working on
these paintings for “BLACK” has sparked my interest in color again – in this
case, a glorious manganese blue. The blue and the black shimmer together,
giving the black a mysterious power, and turning the blue into the light that
seeps through the cracks in consciousness.
“Everyone carries a shadow,” Jung wrote, “and the less it is embodied in
the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is.” Jung believed
that “in spite of its function as a reservoir for human darkness – or perhaps
because of this – the shadow is the seat of creativity.”
Everyone knows what a hassle it is to move. I moved to the other side of Santa Fe last month, and my life has been understandably chaotic for several weeks. But my painting practice has helped me through it. Every day, the deliberate act of focusing on painting one tiny rectangle at a time helps me find my center. Calming energies emerge from the process of creating a grid painting, healing me from anxiety and stress. The repetitive and meditative engagement with the canvas is so beneficial to me -- I wonder if the same peaceful effect is transferred to the viewer?
Santa Fe's wonderful Axle Contemporary is moving indoors for a while, hosted by Peters Projects. In celebration of Axle's fifth year of bringing New Mexico artists to the local scene via it's mobile gallery, "Axle Indoors" gathers together over 150 artists that have participated in Axle's exhibitions over the years.

Two of my most recent paintings are included in the show. I am very excited about this new direction in my work -- a more expansive exploration of the grid. I have enlarged each unit of the grid composition, and emphasized a horizontal format which references the desert landscape. I have also pared down my palette to essentially black and white (with some neutral shades of brown, green, and gold). Although inherently minimal in composition and color, there is an opportunity to work with light, texture, and spatial effects that I am really enjoying.

If you are in the Santa Fe area, I hope you'll stop by Peters Projects and take a look at the exhibition and my new paintings. There will also be a poetry reading and performance on Saturday, March 14th, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.
I love the way these two images interact. I have been looking at them both together on the studio wall for a month now, and I enjoy them so much I thought I'd share them as a pair. On the left is my oil painting, Shimmering Air. On the right, is a photo collage from a 2014 calendar, called Tao (published by Amber Lotus Publishing). Although my grid painting has the rigid elements of geometry, it still floats and shimmers, much like the reflection of the winter branches in the water in the photograph. I also enjoy how the calligraphic elements in the photo collage mirror the grid composition of the painting.

At this time of reflection, at the end of the year, I would like to wish all of you a very blessed 2015.

The recent Surface exhibition at Space Gallery in Denver was beautifully installed. The curator of the gallery happened to hang my paintings, Drift 1 - 4, in a vertical stack, instead of the long horizontal line I had originally envisioned. The dimensions of this stack are 36 inches wide by approximately 58 inches high. I think this presentation gives the series a new interpretation from what I had intended and, in fact, I love this stacked grouping. I feel as though the curator, Michael Burnett, has collaborated with me on an entirely singular piece!

The exhibition closes on November 1st, so if you happen to be in Denver please visit the gallery and enjoy the show.
There will be a reception for the artists on September 26th from 6:00-9:00pm. In addition to my work, this show will feature work from nine other artists: Jo Marks Aardsma, Tonia Bonnell, Michael Burnett, Nancy Charak, Sophia Dixon Dillo, Carlene Frances, Susan Gibbons, Nancy Koenigsberg, and Sharon Swidler. SURFACE is the fifth installment of the "Art of the Real" series of exhibitions, curated by Jo Marks Aardsma.

From Space's website: "This exhibit interests itself in the 'non-objective': art that is not
representational, that contains no recognizable figures or objects, art
that has no intentional derivation from any concrete matter. The work for this show was selected because each artist uses the
surface as a crucial element beyond a vehicle on which to apply a
medium….either revealing what is behind/under the surface or
concealing/altering/manipulating the surface itself and in a palette of
white, black, gray, or neutral."

The four paintings from my Drift series were specifically created for this installation. The show will be up through November 1st, 2014. I hope you'll have a chance to visit the exhibition.

I am very pleased to announce that I have designed and created a new website for my grid paintings. I feel this new site enhances the minimalist aesthetic of my work. Please take a look at dianemcgregor.com. There is a scroll bar at the bottom with featured paintings, and you can click on the thumbnail above the scroll bar to get large versions of each painting. Arrows to the right and left of the enlarged image will point you to the next painting in the portfolio. There is a place on the contact page to share your email address with me if you are interested in being on my mailing list. Thank you!
"In true meditation the emphasis is on being awareness: not on being aware of objects, but on resting as primordial awareness itself.... Silence and stillness are not states and therefore cannot be produced or created. Silence is the non-state in which all states arise and subside.... Silence itself is the eternal witness without form or attributes. As you rest more profoundly as the witness, all objects take on their natural functionality, and awareness becomes free of the mind's compulsive contractions and identifications, and returns to its natural non-state of Presence." ~ Adyashanti, from True Meditation.
I am working on several new series of panoramic abstractions. Although the image says to the viewer's brain, "This is landscape," in reality these images are coming from deep within me and don't reference any landscape objective. These two drawings are part of a series of 10. I'm also working on several oil paintings within this panoramic format. One series currently in progress consists of 5 oil on canvas paintings measuring 12x36 inches each. I'm very excited about the spiritual and psychological potential of this work. I am allowing the images to emerge from a still point of concentration. Continuing with my exploration of the grid, the images are
built up from horizontal and vertical strokes of graphite. A friend called this work "silent grids," and I rather like that definition. The underlying structure of the imagery is a grid, yet the end result is very fluid and organic. I am using the same technique with the oil paintings as well -- each layer of paint is added by applying vertical and horizontal brushstrokes, evoking light and shadow, form and substance, without leaving any boundary traces or definitive edges.

I enjoy collecting different translations of the Tao Te Ching. I am always interested in how various scholars reveal the hidden gems in this widely published classic. I recently came across this translation by Witter Bynner, and I loved it. I was surprised to learn that he was a Santa Fe poet. He was famous for hosting large parties attended by artistic and literary celebrities such as D.H. Lawrence, Willa Cather, Ansel Adams, Georgia O'Keeffe, Robert Frost, Aldous Huxley, and W.H. Auden, among many others. His historic home is now open to the public as a bed and breakfast inn located in downtown Santa Fe.
Wishing all of my readers a transformative 2014!
"An artist makes a spiritual evaluation of the essence within a thing and then he[she] gets it out; that is the outer appearance of the inner essence and, it is the point. Sophisticated materials and complex systems are not necessarily good media for art because art is a simple thing and, the more simple the medium, the less you have to get over to get to the fact of the piece." -- John Chamberlain

I have always loved the simplicity of my materials. I have not wavered from my use of traditional oil paints on canvas for over 20 years. I always use Schmincke Mussini oil paints on primed canvas -- no fillers, waxes, driers, complex mediums or varnishes, just oil paint and mineral spirits. Graphite on paper is also another favorite choice of media -- and you can't get much simpler than a pencil and a piece of paper.

I think Chamberlain is correct in stating that there is sometimes a disconnect between the method and materials and the essence of a piece of art, especially in today's art world, where beauty and refinement are often marginalized, and gimmicks and poor craftsmanship seem to get all the attention. I am honestly perplexed by and frustrated with much of the art that is being produced and treated seriously in today's art market. Alas, I continue to plod along on the path toward beauty and essence, and I refuse to give up on the spiritual nature of my task.
New ideas are germinating in the studio. I have been doing
lots of small graphite drawings in preparation for new paintings that I
have planned. These drawings show my interest in the dissolution of
boundaries: I want all the forms to be in a process of becoming, or
transitioning, or fading away. No lines, no edges, everything melting
onto/into the surface, dissolving all points of view onto the surface,
and bringing landscape influences toward a non-objective context. I am
seeking to represent a vibration of form, light, and shadow -- a
vibration that I sense in nature and the landscape, but without specific
references.

These are 4 panels from a 48-piece installation, entitled "Magnetic Drift." Each oil on panel artwork measures 4x4 inches. The 48 pieces will be arranged in a grid. I will be showing them with the Lady Minimalists Tea Society at Axle Contemporary in Santa Fe. Axle is a roving art gallery in a renovated step van. This unique venue travels around Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and surrounding communities. In this installation, we have attached steel panels to the inside of the van, and all of our small artworks will have magnets attached to the back. Each artist will install her panels as she desires, and then the public is invited to rearrange the panels in new combinations. The viewers/participants are encouraged to freely express their creative ideas in mixing up the panels, incorporating new and original compositions into this site-specific installation. This should be a very fun show, and I hope you'll be able to attend the opening reception on Friday, September 6th, from 5 - 7pm at the Railyard.
